2011 to be the year of Voluntourism

Thursday, 20 January 2011 10:47 AM

Brits are increasingly keen on giving something back as part of their travels, and this trend will make voluntourism a key catchword for 2011, according to the International Tourism Trade Fairs Association.

Voluntourism is defined as travelling abroad and taking part in any volunteer project whilst receiving no compensation. There are many types of volunteer vacations, ranging from cleaning up local wildlife areas which require little or no skill, to providing medical aid in a disaster struck zone.

Since the 1990s, this trend has really taken off; with many charities and travel agents working together to offer volunteering opportunities to gap year travellers and career break professionals alike.

As more and more travellers look to do some volunteering, Scandinavian trade fair TUR has teamed up with Amzungo, a specialist volunteering travel agency, to over a free travel package worth €1,000 (£840) for one lucky voluntourist.
