Choosing what type of gap year you want to go on can be a very difficult choice. There are so many options out there, you could choose to volunteer, work abroad, teach English, do an activity or even just travel. There are also so many gap year companies out there to help organise these trips of a life time that it can be confusing to know who to go with. Each week we’ll be focusing on a different gap year company to make that all important decision just that little bit easier. This week we’re featuring Xtreme Gap Year

Who are they?
Xtreme Gap Year offer gap years that are all about adrenalin and adventure travel, combing exciting projects with activities and experiences. They offer programmes for people on a gap year, those taking a career break or those just after a challenging travel experience. Xtreme Gap have a ‘no volunteering’ policy and prefer to concentrate on gap experiences and cultural exchange, although do provide some wildlife conservation trips.

Types of gap years they offer... Xtreme Gap Year primarily offer three types of gap years, Ultimate Trips, which take in the best experiences a country has to offer; Group Travel, which is great for those first time travellers and allows you to experience a country with others in the same situation; and Adrenalin Tours which features thrilling adrenaline fuelled activities for those once in a life time experiences.

Examples of trips include Namibia wildlife conservation, surfing in Australia, martial arts training in Thailand, whale shark diving in Mozambique and even a paid underwater film maker internship! You could also learn capoeira in Brazil, go on a field guide course in South Africa or a wildlife photography course or become a ski instructor in Canada. The options seem endless.

Countries... The company offer trips in a wide variety of countries including Bolivia, Brazil and Ecuador in South America; Loas, Philippines, Thailand and Sri Lanka in Asia; South Africa, Tanzania, Namibia and Mozambique in Africa; as well as Australia and New Zealand and countries in the Caribbean and South Pacific Islands. Besides these countries there are many more to choose from, go to the Xtreme Gap Year website for a full list.

Finance and price... Prices for the programmes vary greatly depending on where you go, what you do and how long you stay. You can choose to do activities for just two weeks or longer activities learning a language, going on a course or conservation for a few months. If your programme includes more adrenalin based activities such as diving, surfing or white water rafting expect to pay more money. Most trips include accommodation and activities and exclude flights.

Why should I choose Xtreme Gap Year?
Choose extreme gap if you’re after something a little bit different on your gap year, if you want a challenge and to push yourself to the limits. The company is also great if you want a wide range of countries and activities to choose from.
