Safety tips for female travellers

Friday, 11 March 2011 9:19 AM

The reasons why men and women travel may be the same, but ultimately a women travelling alone has very different concerns than her male counterpart. From safety issue to different cultural norms, women can encounter a verity of unique challenges.

The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) can help travellers with hints and tips on how to stay safe while travelling.

ASTA recommend travellers learn as much as they can about their destination, learn about the area’s cultural and religious beliefs and to be sensitive to these local customs and adapt their dress and demeanour accordingly.

Hotel safety is another important aspect of travelling says ASTA president Chris Russo. He recommends getting to know the staff so they are familiar with guests and can monitor more effectively who enters and exits the building.

When exploring the area, find out what transport options are available and what time the public transport finishes, especially late at night.

Knowing your surroundings, study a map of the area you are visiting, if available, download the maps to your phone is another tip says Mr Russo.

Mr Russ said: “Travel is an adventure, but fear of the unknown shouldn’t keep anyone from fulfilling their travel dreams whether it’s with family and friends or on your own."
