A recent poll by holidayextras.com showed that 48 per cent of Brits prefer reading on a flight to any other activity, and 2011’s intrepid travellers have two new recommendations to sink their teeth into.

The Travel Press Awards last week announced their choices for the Travel Books of the year, and Griff Rhys Jones took the top prize in the narrative category for Rivers: One Man and his Dog Paddle into the Heart of Britain.

Meanwhile, Marrakech Day by Day, by Kerry Christiani was picked out as the best Travel Guide Book of the year.

Best publication went to Lonely Planet Magazine, which was also highly commended for its travellers’ guide to Australia.

Steve Lawrence, holidayextras.com chairman and one member of the panel of judges for the Travel Book of the Year, said: “It’s very heartening to see that people are still choosing to read on a plane journey – and what better way to start a holiday than reading a good travel book.”
