Two YHA hostels have scooped the top awards for backpacker accommodation at the 2012 Quantas Australian Tourism Awards.

Sydney Harbour YHA and Brisbane YHA came first and second respectively, in the Best Backpacker Accommodation category. The 27th annual awards looked to commemorate the very best in Australian travel by assessing thousands of local tourism businesses.

Sydney Harbour YHA impressed with its five-star AAA-rated facilities, environmentally sustainable design, and unique Australian heritage experience. The purpose built 334 bed hostel features WiFi, a coffee bar and stunning harbour views from the roof terrace.

Meanwhile, the Brisbane YHA was commended for its themed accommodation facilities which promote the iconic experiences of Australia; city, rainforest, outback, reef and beach. The purpose built hostel is located in the city centre and boasts elevated views across the Brisbane River. Facilities include a roof-top pool, indoor and outdoor dining and entertainment areas, a self-catering kitchen and a licensed bar / bistro.

Rooms in the Brisbane YHA are prices from around AUS$29.50 per person, per night. Rooms at the Sydney Harbour YHA average at around $37.50 per person, per night.
