Asian food comes out on top

Asian food has been voted as the most popular in a poll by travel search site Skyscanner, taking three of the top five positions.

Pad Thai from Thailand, Peking Duck from China and Sushi from Japan all finished in the top five most popular national dishes but it was Pasta, the national dish of Italy which took top spot. Paella made up the top five, by taking third place.

Dim Sum of Hong Kong and Satay of Indonesia also made it in to the top 15.

Perhaps the most surprising was the offering from India, which is well known for being a popular food in England. It was the Biryani which was the most popular option but it only took six per cent of the vote – the same as the Greek dish of Moussaka.

Sushi also polled six per cent, which shows how far the Japanese dish has come in recent years. 10 years ago, sushi was only seen in expensive Japanese restaurants, now it is commonly available in most supermarkets.

Skyscanner Travel Editor, Sam Baldwin, said: "Asian cuisine has become increasingly popular as our appetite for well-flavoured dishes has grown in recent years.

"While Spanish paella and Italian pasta held on to the popular vote to gain places in the top 5, national dishes from Thailand, mainland China, Japan, India and Hong Kong dominated the rest of the top 10."
