Thursday, 1 September 2011 9:52 AM

Now results day has come and gone, travel agents are enjoying a wealth of new gap year bookings. Travel comparison site Cheapflights.co.uk says Australia maintains its popularity among backpacking Brits, despite the economic downturn.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there were 5.9 million visitor arrivals during the year ended June 2011, an increase of 3.8% on the previous year.

Cheapflights.co.uk has produced an information guide, The Alternative Kangaroo Trail, which reveals some hidden gems across the west and east coast trails. The trail includes cities that rival Sydney and Melbourne, for a more authentic Australia experience.

Information on flights and visas is included alongside top trails and places to visit, such as breweries.

Oonagh Shiel, Senior Site Editor for Cheapflights.co.uk, said: “Guide books can often be dry and churn out the same old facts, so we’ve createdour guides online and made them fun, easy to digest and share with friends. We’ll be asking our Facebook fans their opinions on what the next guide should be, so watch this space.”
